Cadwell Park to feature in Mike Hailwood TV documentary

Wednesday, March 26 2014

A documentary filmed at Cadwell Park will premiere on BT Sport 1 tonight (Wednesday). "An Ordinary Hero: The Mike Hailwood Story" will also be repeated on the channel over the coming weeks.

The film celebrates the life of Motorcycle racing legend Hailwood, who dominated the sport in the 1960s, taking 9 World Championships and 14 TT wins. The latter included a sensational comeback after battling back from injuries sustained during a car racing career that saw him compete in Grands Prix.

The documentary looks back at the dangers riders faced back then, when the paddock was a lot friendlier and the social scene was nearly as important as the actual races.

Unseen archive mixed with insightful interviews from his widow Pauline, and motor racing greats such as Murray Walker, Sir Jackie Stewart and Carl Fogarty illustrate the incredible life and ultimate tragedy of one of Motorsport's finest.

The sequence filmed at Cadwell Park is used to reflect Mike's retirement from motorsport before he decided to make his successful return to the TT in 1978. Former professional motorcycle racer Mick Grant, winner of 7 TT races on a 500c Honda RC181, played the part of Hailwood for this piece.

"An Ordinary Hero: The Mike Hailwood Story" can be seen on BT Sport 1 on Wednesday 26 March at 9:30pm.
