Sammy Miller MBE aims to run rare Moto Guzzi V8 at Cadwell Classic

Tuesday, July 14 2015

Legendary racer and collector Sammy Miller MBE is working hard to prepare a rare and charismatic Moto Guzzi V8 500cc motorcycle in time for a demonstration run at this month's Cadwell Park International Classic (25/26 July).

The Moto Guzzi Otto Cilindri made its debut 60 years ago and in 500cc Grand Prix racing was way ahead of its time, reaching speeds of over 170mph 20 years before its competitors. Despite this, the 148kg bike's tyres, suspension and brakes struggled to contain the power and together with reliability issues, the machine was unable to deliver on its huge potential.

However, the Otto Cilindri is fondly remembered by motorcycle racing fans, and was ranked as one of the ten greatest bikes of all time on a Discovery Channel TV programme. Much of its appeal is attributed to the tiny 45kg V8 engine's distinctive engine note, which it is hoped, will be heard again at the International Classic.

Miller, whose achievements include 11 British Trials Championships and two European Trials Championships, plus outright wins in over 1410 events, still competes in addition to his restoration work, from which his museum was founded. He is currently aiming to prepare the Otto Cilindri in time for the event, and said: "We have received the parts required to get the V8 Moto Guzzi running again, and all being well we will have it ready for Cadwell Park. We are sure the crowds will be pleased to see and hear this fantastic bike performing!"

Tickets for the Cadwell Park International Classic are available from £15, with free entry for children under 13. For more information call 0843 453 9000 or click here to visit the dedicated event website.
