Six classic MV Agustas to appear at the International Classic

Friday, July 03 2015

Six rare MV Agusta motorcycles will grace this July's (25/26) Cadwell Park International Classic, and will be taking part in track parades at the event with World Champions Giacomo Agostini and Phil Read amongst the riders.

The Italian marque dominated Motorcycle Grands Prix from the late 1950s until the early 70s, and former factory riders Agostini and Read will be joined at the event by Dave Hailwood, son of Mike 'The Bike' Hailwood, who won four 500cc titles onboard MV Agusta machinery.

15-time World Champion Agostini will ride a 1972 MV Agusta 3 cylinder 500cc, similar to the one he used to win his seventh consecutive 500cc crown for the Italian marque. Owned by Peter Fox, the bike has been built with a mixture of original and replica parts to the original specification.

Fox will also be providing and riding an exact replica of the 1974 MV Agusta 4 cylinder 500cc, which was built by Dave and Mark Kay. It is based on the last 500cc four-stroke motorcycle to win a World Championship GP series, with the Japanese two-stroke bikes dominating from thereon.

Read will also be riding a replica of his 1974 World Championship-winning MV 4 cylinder 500cc, provided by owner John Chapman. After ending team-mate Agostini's dominance in 1973, Read claimed a second successive 500cc crown with the original machine. It would turn out to be MV Agusta's final title - their 17th in a row.

In addition to the 1974 machine, Chapman will be bringing a replica of Agostini's 1965 MV 3 cylinder 500cc, a season in which the Italian was runner-up to team-mate Mike Hailwood.

Finally, Ray Marchant will be bringing two motorcycles from his collection, including Phil Read's 1972 500cc four cylinder bike and a 1972 three cylinder 500cc machine owned by and purchased from Giacomo Agostini. This rare bike has never been raced and will be ridden by Ray in the parades.
